Diablo 3 with annual add-ons?

by on Nov.19, 2008, under Diablo 3 News

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime talks to Tracey John from MTV Multiplayer

Here is the Diablo 3 relevant excerpts:

MTV Multiplayer: Activision has had success with franchises like "Call of Duty" and "Guitar Hero" by releasing games annually. Do you look at that business model at all and wonder if that would work for Blizzard? Do you think there's more profit in hitting the annual mark? Or do you think players need the breathing room?

Morhaime: In terms of expansions, I think a little bit more frequently is probably good with sort of the goal to get closer to to annual expansion. But I think it really depends on what content you put in the expansion. I do not think Blizzard will ever be able to do sequels of products like a "Diablo III" or "Diablo IV" on an annual basis, but we might be able to do expansions to those games close to annually.

Morhaime thinks that annual extensions may fit well with Blizzard's strategy, but he does not consider it possible that complete games like Diablo could appear three quarters per year. Blizzard moves so again a good short, aimed not at EA as quickly mass produced. Consider how many times EA creates real genre hits, some last for years. Blizzard has it with Diablo 2, Starcraft, and several Warcrft three in the race.

MTV Multiplayer: DRM is not an issue for Blizzard, but it's been an issue for other PC games. What advice do you have for other publishers? Do you think about DRM?

Morhaime: We do think about it. Well, we've approached DRM in the past in multiple ways, but probably the primary copy protection that we have is providing value-added features that you can only get by Battlenet.

Blizzard thinks that is the method of copy protection DRM to, but keeps the Battle.net for a better way, because you can only play with his personal key online. Unlike other interviews, but apparently not, DRM is consistently excluded, although the system both in the gaming, as well as the music industry has failed after a quasi-global criticism.

    So it hidden monthly costs.
The balance with the crowbar, a la WoW (maximum level increase and overpowered items) will force the customer to purchase addon.

The advantage is that you can still play it.
As long as you like in D2 separates the mode, there are no problems. Nice that D3 is not an MMORPG.
